Dr Stefania Siedlecky AM (1921-2016)
 

Dr Stefania Siedlecky had a long and distinguished career as a progressive medical doctor in NSW.

During a speech she made at the launch of Lost:Illegal Abortion Stories by Jo Wainer (on 18th May, 2006), Dr Siedlecky spoke about how, as a young doctor working in a Sydney Hospital, she had found patients dying of infection from self-induced abortions and a culture of blame and shame towards them.

She worked to change that throughout her career, protecting the lives of women and improving the understanding of doctors and medical staff.

In 2011, WAAC requested an interview with Dr Siedlecky. The interview was conducted by Pru Wirth at Dr Siedlecky's home. The video was filmed and edited by Tim Anderson.
